Nature Based Support/Float Teacher
Hinesburg and Essex Locations
(All Classrooms at All Locations)

FULL JOB DESCRIPTION

Be the extra set of hands, the familiar face and the support that helps our classrooms thrive.

Do you love working with children but enjoy a little variety in your day?

Are you someone who can jump into a classroom, connect with children, support a teaching team and quickly figure out where you’re needed most?

First Roots – Wild Roots is looking for a warm, flexible and dependable Support / Float Teacher to join our 5-STAR nature-based early childhood program.

This is a unique opportunity for someone who enjoys working with different ages, classrooms, programs and teaching teams. Rather than being assigned to one classroom every day, our Support Teacher moves throughout the program to provide additional support where it is needed most.

One day you may be cuddling an infant, the next helping toddlers get ready to explore outside and later joining preschoolers for an adventure in the woods. No two days are exactly the same!

What You’ll Do:

As a Support Teacher, you'll help our classrooms run smoothly while building relationships with children and educators throughout our program. You'll:

  • Provide classroom coverage for teacher breaks, planning time, meetings and other needs

  • Engage with children through play, exploration and hands-on learning

  • Support children ranging from infants through preschool and, when needed, school-age programming

  • Help with diapering, toileting, feeding, dressing and other daily care routines

  • Encourage children's independence in developmentally appropriate ways

  • Support classroom transitions, including meals, outdoor time and rest time

  • Assist teachers with preparing activities, projects and classroom materials

  • Help maintain welcoming, organized and safe classroom environments

  • Pitch in with light classroom and program-wide tasks when needed

  • Follow Vermont Child Care Licensing Regulations and FRWR health and safety practices

Most importantly, you'll be someone our teachers can count on and our children are happy to see walk through the classroom door.

Who We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who:

  • Genuinely enjoys spending time with young children

  • Is nurturing, patient, playful and respectful

  • Can comfortably move between different classrooms, programs, age groups and routines

  • Is flexible when plans change — because in early childhood, they often do!

  • Works well independently and as part of a teaching team

  • Is dependable, punctual and ready to jump in where needed

  • Brings a sense of humor and a positive attitude to the day

  • Believes children learn best through play, relationships and hands-on experiences

  • Is at least 18 years old

  • Has reliable transportation
